"When are you interviewing Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have also coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"So everyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

Yet the band will forever be their primary focus.

"We have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
