British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
