The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
