While Swimmers Ran From Danger, Popular Photo Shows Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, detected cracking sounds echoing across the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, talking to a pair who had hurried up the slope in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to escape from, while holding that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of courage in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and medical teams treating numerous victims.

Local Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the scene of the incident becoming a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, for instance entering the water to assist people needing help.

Following the tragedy, statements of gratitude circulated widely. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The group of beach patrol issued a message, noting they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our team,” the group wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the shooting commenced right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” said a local official.

“These individuals show altruism every day in keeping our world-famous coastlines protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on Sunday should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
